Rosuvastatin is considered a 3rd generation statin. Most clinicians would love to be able to get all their patients on Rosuvastatin since it is regarded as a “super statin” due to its high potency and efficacy.
However, most insurance programs want patients to start on first or second generation statins. Then if the Patient has side effects then insurance might look to paying for a 3rd generation statin.
The funny thing is, on a wholesale basis, Rosuvastin is practically the same price as first and second generation statins.
So, at Haven, our standard statin we start members on is a Rosuvastatin since it is practically the same cost as the less powerful statins.
